What the work actually is
A large share of mining welding is repair and reclamation rather than fabrication: rebuilding worn buckets and teeth, patching chutes and liners, repairing structural steel that has been in service for years, and hardfacing surfaces that abrasion has eaten.
That changes the consumable mix. Hardfacing electrodes and wires matter far more than they do in a fabrication shop, flux-cored wire earns its place because the work is outdoors and out of position, and 7018 features heavily because the sections are thick and often restrained.
Plan quantities against the scope, not the month
The single most common failure in shutdown supply is ordering an average month’s consumables for a scope that consumes three. Shutdown lists should be quoted line by line — grade, diameter, pack size, quantity — with the quantity derived from the joints in the scope and a margin for the ones that get discovered once the machine is open.
Get it confirmed in writing before the shutdown starts, including lead times on anything not held. A confirmed lead time you dislike is still better than an assumption that fails on day two.
Consumables are not only wire and rods
- Contact tips, nozzles, liners and drive rollers — the parts that stop a machine mid-shift.
- Cutting and grinding discs, flap discs and burrs, in the quantities preparation actually needs.
- Gas cutting consumables: nozzles, tips, hoses, regulators and flashback arrestors.
- Welding PPE — helmets, gloves, jackets and respiratory protection — before anyone strikes an arc.
Why in-country stock decides the outcome
On the Zambian Copperbelt and in North-Western Province, the distance between a shortfall and a resupply is a border post. That is why consumables are held at the Kitwe warehouse and forwarded through Solwezi rather than promised from South Africa — a shutdown planner cannot build a schedule around a customs queue.
The same logic applies to repeat lines. Items that were used last shutdown stay on file, so the next order is a reference number and a quantity rather than a fresh specification exercise.
